Our fifty or so shelter dogs don’t have their own sofa in the family room, or even a food bowl of their own (they use the steel bowls in the kitchen). But shelter dogs need to be walked every day, regardless of the weather – rain, snow, heat or cold. Walks start and end by walking through the kennel, a gauntlet of smack-talking dogs – your pup will either be scared to death or pushed into fight mode. Our route includes a few passes around the building on too little grass and too much parking lot. Along the way, we stop in one of the gravel runs where they can play, wander, or sit on a bench with their walker.
Walking dogs is hard work. The dogs have pent-up energy, sometimes little training, and always difficulty focusing.
